West of the Moon is a collaboration between musicians, Angela de Klerk (voice) and Nicholas Rumpelt (guitar). Combining their diverse musical experiences, they create a warm and reflective performance that softly sways between dark and light. Vocal melodies float over a lush soundscape of expansive guitar, rising and falling to produce a dynamic and versatile performance. Drawing on a collection of traditional jazz standards and various contemporary numbers, the duo is continuously progressing and looking for ways to expand their sound and repertoire. Nicholas Rumpelt graduated with a BMus from Wits University in 2014, majoring in Jazz Guitar Performance Studies, under the tutelage of Carlo Mombelli, Hugo de Waal and Jonathan Crossley. He is a permanent member of The Saucetones, and works regularly with many of Johannesburg’s top performing artists as a session musician. He currently teaches at Auckland Park Preparatory School, where he tutors guitar and bass.
Angela de Klerk has been performing for bands as a front-woman, as well as a supporting musician, for over ten years. She has toured nationally and internationally with her band, Japan and I, as well as joining Cape Town based band, The Shabs, on two of their European tours. She is a permanent member of Rambling Bones and continues to perform at shows and festivals around South Africa.
